PLURAL OF NOUNS

Hello, y’all!

Let’s talk about plurals today, shall we?

1- In English, most nouns form the plural by adding -s or -es (nouns which finish in -s, -ss, -ch, -sh, -x, -z, -o).

one pencil, many pencils

Examples:
+ s
cat — cats
dog — dogs
window — windows
wall — walls
boy — boys
girl — girls
book – books

+es
lens — lenses
kiss — kisses
watch — watches
dish — dishes
box — boxes
waltz — waltzes
potato — potatoes

2- With a noun ending in -y preceded by a consonant, however, the plural is made by removing the -y and adding -ies.

Examples:
city — cities
puppy — puppies
lady — ladies
baby — babies

3- When ending in -f or -fe, we substitute the endings by -ves

Examples:
wife — wives
knife — knives
leaf — leaves
thief — thieves
half — halves
life — lives

4- Irregular plurals:

woman — women
man — men
child — children
tooth — teeth
foot — feet
person — people
mouse — mice
goose — geese
cactus — cacti
focus — foci
fungus — fungi
analysis — analyses
diagnosis — diagnoses
crisis — crises
phenomenon — phenomena
criterion — criteria

5- Some nouns have the same form in the singular and the plural.

one fish, a hundred fish

Examples:
sheep — sheep
fish — fish
species — species
aircraft — aircraft
[a piece of] information – [some] information
[a piece of] advice – [some] advice

6- Some nouns have a plural form but take a singular verb.

Examples:
news
athletics
linguistics
darts
billiards

7- Some nouns have a plural form and take a plural verb.

Examples:
trousers
jeans
glasses
savings
steps
stairs
customs
congratulations
wages
goods
